Sparks is an American band founded in 1972 by brothers Ron and Russell Mael. Known for their unique mix of glam rock, art pop and electronic elements, they have shaped the musical landscape for decades. Their charismatic vocal style, combined with ironic and often humorous lyrics, set them apart from other bands.
With hits like This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us (1974) and The Number One Song in Heaven (1979), Sparks achieved international fame. They found a loyal fan base in Europe and the UK in particular. Their musical style always remained experimental and they influenced many later artists, including Depeche Mode and Franz Ferdinand, with whom they formed the joint project FFS started.
Even after more than 50 years, Sparks are still active and creative. 2021 saw the release of the acclaimed film Annettefor which they provided the screenplay and soundtrack. Their music remains timeless, full of innovation and humour, and their influence on the pop and rock scene is undeniable.
