Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band known for their uncompromising sound, political lyrics and experimental style. Founded in 1991 in Umeå, the band gained particular fame with their album The Shape of Punk to Come (1998) achieved cult status. Their style combines hardcore punk with elements of post-hardcore, jazz, electronica and avant-garde, making them one of the most influential bands in the hardcore scene.
After disbanding in 1998, the band became famous for their visionary work, as many subsequent bands were inspired by their progressive approach. In 2012, Refused made a surprise return and played at major festivals around the world. With the album Freedom (2015) and War Music (2019), they proved that they are still full of energy and creative vigour.
The band is known for its socially critical lyrics, which are directed against capitalism, fascism and social injustice. Frontman Dennis Lyxzén brings an enormous intensity to the music with his charismatic stage presence. Refused remains one of the most influential hardcore bands of all time and stands for a mixture of musical innovation and political activism.
