Pioneers of death metal from Florida
Obituary are one of the most influential bands in death metal and have been at the forefront of the genre since the late 1980s. Founded in 1984 in Tampa, Florida, under the original name Executioner, brothers John and Donald Tardy, together with guitarist Trevor Peres, quickly made a name for themselves in Florida's flourishing metal scene.
Her debut album, released in 1989 Slowly We Rot was a milestone in extreme metal and set new standards with its low-tuned guitar sound, powerful drums and John Tardy's unmistakable guttural vocals. Obituary were partly responsible for defining the classic Florida death metal sound, characterised by groove and raw brutality.
In the 1990s, they cemented their status with albums such as Cause of Death, The End Complete and World Demisewhich are still regarded as genre classics today. After a brief break-up in the early 2000s, the band made a strong comeback and have been regularly active on tour and in the studio ever since. Their later works show that, despite decades in the business, they have lost none of their energy and ferocity.
