Nena, whose real name is Gabriele Susanne Kerner, was born on 24 March 1960 in Hagen. She is one of Germany's most successful pop singers, with over 25 million records sold worldwide.
She began her musical career in 1977 as the singer of the band The Stripes. She had her breakthrough in 1982 with the band Nena and the song „Nur geträumt“ (Just a Dream). With the hit “99 Luftballons” (99 Balloons), she became internationally famous in 1983 as part of the Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) movement.
In 1989, Nena launched her solo career with the song „Wunder gescheh'n“ (Miracles Happen). She has released several solo albums and pursued various musical projects throughout her career.
Nena is also known for her personal convictions. She has been a vegan for many years and is committed to various social and environmental causes.
Today she lives with her family in Hamburg.
