Intelligent pop with British humour and orchestral elegance
The Divine Comedy is the musical project of Northern Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Neil Hannon. Since the early 1990s, the name has been synonymous with a very unique sound world in which classical pop arrangements, orchestral splendour and a subtle, often ironic sense of humour come together. Hannon, who was inspired by artists such as Scott Walker, Jacques Brel and the Pet Shop Boys, combines literary depth with catchy melodies - creating an unmistakable musical universe.
The Divine Comedy's breakthrough came in 1996 with the album Casanovawhich became a surprise success with songs such as "Something for the Weekend" and "Becoming More Like Alfie". This was followed by works such as Fin de Siècle and Regenerationwhich show Hannon's versatility as a composer - sometimes melancholic and thoughtful, sometimes playful and sarcastic. The frequent use of string and brass arrangements, which lend the songs an almost cinematic character, is particularly striking.
In over three decades, The Divine Comedy has remained a fixture of the British music world - never quite mainstream, but always style-defining and cultishly revered. Neil Hannon is recognised as one of the brightest and most original songwriters of his generation. With each new release, he proves that elegance, irony and emotion need not be opposites in pop music, but can combine to create a unique sound.
