Singer and guitarist Suryakant Sawhney from the Indian band Peter Cat Recording Co. emphasises: "We don't belong to any particular scene." This is not least due to the fact that there is simply no scene in New Delhi for the kind of music that the collective produces. The core line-up consists of Sawhney, Karan Singh (drums), Dhruv Bhola (bass/samples), Rohit Gupta (keyboards/trumpet) and Kartik Sundareshan (guitars/trumpets), surrounded by a large number of other musicians.inside, sound technicianand video producers. The band members are inspired by a wide range of influences: Sam Cooke is one of their household gods, surf rock from Bangkok and extensive psychedelic interludes characterise their sound. At the same time, great crooners such as Frank Sinatra serve as role models for the vocals, while the DIY approach of the Velvet Underground forms the method. If you ask the band about other sources, terms such as gypsy jazz, cabaret, ballroom waltz, epic space disco, bossa supernova and Chinese noise rock come to mind. However, this variety of names and styles only forms the rough framework within which Peter Cat Recording Co. create their unique soundscapes. The decisive factor is their own creative input.
