Deftones

Deftones is an American alternative metal band from Sacramento, California, that was founded in 1988. The band, consisting of Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Sergio Vega (bass, until 2021), Frank Delgado (keyboards, samples) and Abe Cunningham (drums), has developed a unique sound over the years that combines elements of metal, shoegaze, post-rock and alternative rock. Their breakthrough came with the album Around the Fur (1997), which laid the foundation for her later success.

With the 2000 album White Pony the band expanded their sonic spectrum and created a modern classic of alternative metal. Songs like Change (In the House of Flies) and Passenger demonstrated a new, atmospheric depth that set them apart from other nu-metal bands of their time. Their later albums, including Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012) and Ohms (2020), showed a continuous evolution that emphasised their experimental approach and their ability to combine brutal heaviness with dreamy melodies.

Deftones have established themselves as one of the most innovative and enduring bands in modern metal. Their signature style, characterised by Chino Moreno's haunting vocal lines and Stephen Carpenter's low-tuned guitars, has inspired numerous artists. Despite personal and tragic setbacks, such as the accident and subsequent death of their bassist Chi Cheng, the band remained creative and relevant. Today, Deftones are recognised as one of the most influential bands in the alternative and experimental metal genre.
