
David Garrett, born David Christian Bongartz on 4 September 1980 in Aachen, is a renowned German violinist. He grew up as the middle of three children and received his first violin lessons from his father, who worked part-time as a violin teacher. He made his first attempts on the violin at the age of just four and won a prize in the Jugend musiziert competition at the age of five.
Garrett made his debut at the age of nine at the Kissinger Sommer festival. He received his first recording contract at the age of twelve, and at the age of 13 he was already under contract exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon and recorded Mozart violin concertos together with Claudio Abbado. After graduating from Einhard-Gymnasium in Aachen, he moved in with his brother, who was studying in New York, at the age of 19. From 1999 to 2004, he also studied musicology and composition at the renowned Juilliard School in New York and was taught by Itzhak Perlman, among others.
Garrett has sold millions of tickets, over 4.5 million albums and has more than 5.65 billion streams worldwide. He has also received 25 gold and 17 platinum awards in places as diverse as Hong Kong, Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, Brazil, Singapore and many more.
His repertoire as a classical violinist includes violin concertos and chamber music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Max Bruch, Fritz Kreisler, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Niccolo Paganini, Peter Tchaikovsky, Antonio Vivaldi and many others.
