Billy Idol, born William Michael Albert Broad on 30 November 1955 in England, is an icon of punk rock and the New Wave movement. His career began in the 1970s as a member of the punk band Generation Xbut when he launched a solo career in the 1980s, he became a worldwide star. With his rebellious image, distinctive blonde mane and hits such as White Wedding, Rebel Yell and Dancing with Myself he characterised the decade and became one of the most famous figures in rock.
Idol's music combines punk, rock and pop elements and is known for its catchy melodies and powerful guitar riffs. His raw vocal style and energetic performance made him a distinctive artist of the MTV era. He became quieter in the 1990s, but remained active and continued to release music, including the successful album Kings & Queens of the Underground (2014).
