Earl Sweatshirt, whose real name is Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, is an American rapper, producer and songwriter who became known primarily as a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future. Born on 24 February 1994, he grew up in Los Angeles and began his musical career under the pseudonym Sly Tendencies.
After being discovered by Tyler, the Creator on MySpace, he joined Odd Future and released his first mixtape, Earl, in 2010. His lyrics and flow quickly earned him recognition in the hip-hop scene. After a brief hiatus, during which he attended a therapeutic school in Samoa, he returned with a promise to release new music once he reached 50,000 followers on Twitter – which he achieved within three hours.
Earl Sweatshirt has since released several successful albums, including Doris (2013), I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside (2015) and Some Rap Songs (2018). His latest work, “Voir Dire,” was released in 2023 and showcases his development as an artist. He also runs his own label, Tan Cressida, which was initially supported by Columbia Records and later by Warner.
His music is characterised by introspective lyrics and an experimental approach to production. Earl Sweatshirt remains an influential voice in hip hop, known for his honest and often personal narratives.
