Spiritbox is a Canadian metal band formed in 2016 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The band consists of vocalist Courtney LaPlante, guitarist Mike Stringer, bassist Josh Gilbert (since 2023) and drummer Zev Rose (since 2020).
Band members Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer, who were previously active in the band Iwrestledabearonce, founded Spiritbox and released their self-titled EP in 2017. The band's name is derived from a device that can supposedly communicate with the dead by rapidly scanning radio frequencies and creating a sound effect.
Spiritbox gained greater attention with their song "Holy Roller", which stayed at number one on the programme format Devil's Dozen on the radio station Sirius XM for six weeks in 2020. Their music is known for a mix of progressive metal, djent, metalcore and alternative metal.
The band has overcome a number of challenges, including a European tour with After the Burial, which had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a tour with Limp Bizkit in 2021, which was also ended prematurely due to safety concerns.
Despite these setbacks, Spiritbox has gained recognition and was nominated in the Best Metal Performance category at the 2024 Grammy Awards and twice at the Juno Awards. With their dynamic music and ability to overcome adversity, Spiritbox has built a loyal fan base and is considered one of the up-and-coming forces in the metal scene.
