John Cameron Fogerty, born on 28 May 1945 in Berkeley, California, is an American singer, songwriter and rock guitarist. He is best known as the founder and musical mastermind of the rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR).
Fogerty grew up as the third of five sons and initially attended a Catholic school. His parents were alcoholics and divorced when he was in third or fourth grade. He later attended St. Mary's High School and then transferred to El Cerrito High School, where he met the other future members of CCR and took guitar lessons from Barry Olivier, the founder and producer of the Berkeley Folk Festival.
In 1966, Fogerty received his draft notice for military service during the Vietnam War. During his time in the Army Reserve, Fogerty attended training at Fort Bragg, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee.
John Fogerty was the frontman and lead guitarist of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), which emerged from the band The Blue Velvets, founded by him and his school friend Doug Clifford in 1959 and later renamed The Golliwogs by the record company. Other members under all three band names were Stu Cook and John Fogerty's older brother Tom, who played rhythm guitar and was also the singer of the band in its early days.
John Fogerty remains an active figure in the music scene and continues his musical career with regular tour dates.
