Dua Lipa, born on 22 August 1995 in London, is a British-Albanian singer and songwriter. She had her first major musical success in 2015.
Dua Lipa was born in London. Her father Dukagjin is Kosovo-Albanian, her mother Anesa is of Bosnian-Albanian descent. When war broke out in Bosnia in 1992 and the situation in Kosovo came to a head, her parents fled to London. Dua Lipa's grandmother had the idea of calling her Dua, which means (I) love in Albanian. In 2022, Dua Lipa was granted Albanian citizenship by President Bajram Begaj.
She attended the renowned Sylvia Young Theatre School. She had to interrupt her training there for a while because her parents went back to Kosovo in 2008 for professional reasons before she returned to London alone at the age of 15. She initially worked in clubs and as a model.
She eventually got in touch with Marlon Roudette, who encouraged her to record demos, which she released on SoundCloud from 2012. She came to the attention of Lana Del Rey's managers and was signed to a record deal by Universal Music.
Her first single, New Love, was released in summer 2015. This was followed in October by Be the One, with which she enjoyed her first success. In addition to eleventh place in the German singles charts, it also made it into the top 10 in several countries.
Her self-titled debut album "Dua Lipa" was released in 2017. The songs Hotter than Hell and Blow Your Mind (Mwah) followed as the third and fourth pre-release singles from her album.
