Baroness is an American heavy metal band from Savannah, Georgia that has been active since 2003. The members of the original line-up (John Baizley, Tim Loose, Summer Welch and Allen Blickle) grew up together in Lexington, Virginia. The band has gone through numerous line-up changes, with Baizley remaining the only constant.
The band plays a mixture of heavy metal styles, including sludge, progressive and alternative. Pitchfork has described the band's sound as "rock music that leans into... more metal leanings, along with something more delicate and spare".
From 2003 to 2007, Baroness recorded two EPs (First and Second) and a split album with Unpersons (A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk). Their first full album, the "Red Album", was released in September 2007 and received positive reviews. The heavy metal magazine Revolver named it album of the year.
In May 2009, the band began recording their second full album, "Blue Record", which was produced by John Congleton. It was released in October 2009 via Relapse Records. In July 2012, the band released the double album "Yellow & Green". Their fourth studio album "Purple" was released in December 2015.
Singer and guitarist John Dyer Baizley designs album covers for his own band as well as for other bands.
